What it is

Appcast runs what it calls the world’s largest job ad exchange. You send it your open requisitions from the ATS and a budget; it spreads the ads across job boards, search engines and social sites, bids per job, and bills on applications rather than impressions. The company describes the network as “thousands of sites”; independent buyer guides put it at 30,000+. Its boilerplate claims more than $1 billion in annual job-ad spend under management.

Appcast is headquartered in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and has been owned by The Stepstone Group since July 2019. Stepstone itself changed hands in April 2025, when Axel Springer split in two: the classifieds business became a joint venture majority-owned by KKR and CPP Investments, with Axel Springer keeping 10%. Founder Chris Forman retired as CEO at the end of 2024, and COO Matt Molinari — an early Indeed employee who joined Appcast in 2017 — took over on 1 January 2025. In July 2023 Appcast bought Bayard Advertising, a recruitment-marketing agency founded in 1923, which is why it now sells creative, employer brand and media strategy alongside the software. Note the customer count: the 2023 Bayard announcement said 2,000+ combined customers, while the February 2026 boilerplate says more than 1,000 clients.

The line splits into media and technology. Xcelerate is the job-board exchange; Search Ads (May 2025) buys search-engine inventory and charges only per completed application; Brand Ads and AppcastOne extend budget allocation across social, display and other channels. Career Sites, Apply, Connect and Xtend work on conversion and re-engagement; Quality Connect feeds interview and hire data back from the ATS; Recruitonomics is the labour-market data arm. Since June 2026, ChatGPT’s US job search surfaces listings from Indeed, Upwork and Appcast, and Appcast sells employer-branded job-search presences inside ChatGPT.

Integrations run through ATS partners — iCIMS (partnered since 2015), Greenhouse, SmartRecruiters, Lever, Paradox, Fountain, Mitratech TalentReef, Pinpoint, Crelate and JazzHR. The Clickcast Platform APIs Appcast released in 2017 target agencies and job sites; we found no public employer-facing API documentation. There is no MCP server.

The part that matters: the dataset, and whether you feed it hires

Every programmatic vendor bids. Appcast’s advantage is the size of the data behind the bids. Its 10th annual benchmark report, published 17 February 2026, drew on 302 million clicks, 27 million applications and nearly 1,200 employers, and added candidate-disposition benchmarks from click through apply, screen, interview, offer and hire for the first time. Its headline finding matters for anyone sizing a budget: cost per application and cost per hire rose sharply in 2025 despite a softer labour market, driven by changes in job-board pricing and programmatic media models.

That dataset only helps you if the engine optimizes toward hires. Without disposition data, Xcelerate allocates spend toward sources that produce applications, and application volume is the number that rises when media is bought badly. Quality Connect is the fix: it pulls interview and hire signals from the ATS and shifts budget toward the sources that produce them. Treat it as part of the core purchase, not an add-on.

Pricing reality

Appcast publishes no rate card. The model is pay-per-applicant at custom rates; SelectSoftwareReviews’ August 2026 guide lists month-to-month terms with no long-term commitment. The cheapest way in is Greenhouse’s Job Ad Market, where Greenhouse customers buy an Appcast programmatic campaign directly: $200 minimum, $300 recommended, a fixed 30-day run, and no edits or refunds once purchased. Enterprise programs run through AppcastOne with account management, and the Bayard-side agency work — creative, EVP, brand campaigns — is priced as services on top of media.

Appcast’s published results — a 43% cost-per-application drop at Encompass Health, 82% more candidates at E&J Gallo, double the driver candidates at Challenger Motor Freight, and 20% more applies with a 15% lower cost per qualified candidate at Search Ads launch — are vendor-selected outcomes. Use them as a ceiling.

Best for

A talent acquisition or recruitment-marketing leader at a multi-site employer — healthcare, retail, logistics, hospitality — or an RPO, running hundreds of requisitions at once, with an ATS on Appcast’s partner list and a cost per hire target someone owns. Appcast is the default buy when you want one exchange to spread budget across every publisher and a vendor with a large parent behind it.

It is the wrong pick below roughly 30 open roles at a time, where posting to two boards directly beats an exchange, and for teams whose main question is the per-publisher cost basis. Reviews split on that point: Capterra rates Appcast 4.4/5 across 31 reviews with support as the main praise, while SelectSoftwareReviews scores users at 3.7/5 and lists limited visibility into which boards produce applications and difficulty controlling spend on high-volume requisitions.

Versus the alternatives

Joveo is the closest independent challenger. Pick Joveo when publisher-level cost per click, per application and per hire is the requirement, or when you also want AI interviewing and scheduling from the media vendor. Pick Appcast when dataset scale and a well-capitalized owner matter more.

Veritone Hire Programmatic (formerly PandoLogic) is the other incumbent. Pick it when you already use Broadbean for job distribution and want programmatic buying on the same contract.

Talroo owns part of its audience and prices per application for frontline and trades roles. Pick Talroo as a second channel next to Appcast when hourly roles dominate and you want an audience that is not only resold inventory.

Adway is the fastest-growing entrant and buys attention on Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn and YouTube instead of job boards. Pick Adway for people who are not searching; it complements an exchange, it does not replace one.

Radancy is the suite answer when career site, CRM, employer brand and media must report into one view. Indeed direct stays the right answer when one board produces most of your hires — Indeed bills sponsored jobs per click after retiring pay-per-application in December 2023.

If none fit, the leak is after the click. A long application form or a slow screen is not fixed by bidding; look at Fountain or Paradox and the high-volume recruiting stack.

Watch-outs

  • Appcast’s parent owns job boards. Stepstone operates boards including StepStone and Totaljobs, so a “source-neutral” exchange sits inside a publisher group. Guard: require a monthly source report that flags Stepstone-owned publishers, compare their cost per hire against the rest of the network, and put the right to exclude any publisher in the order form.
  • Source reporting is coarser than the bill. Reviewers flag limited visibility into which boards produce applicants. Guard: make a publisher-level export — applications, cost per application and ATS-confirmed hires per source — a condition of the first 90 days, and reconcile it against your ATS source report before renewing.
  • Without disposition data, the engine chases volume. Guard: connect Quality Connect or the ATS disposition feed before the first campaign goes live and judge the program on cost per hire, not cost per application. If your ATS is not on the partner list, stay month-to-month until the feed works.
  • Greenhouse marketplace campaigns cannot be changed. Budgets are locked for 30 days with no edits or refunds. Guard: test with $300 on three to five roles with steady applicant flow, not your whole requisition load, and move to a managed program only after the source report proves out.
  • The ChatGPT channel has no track record. Job listings in ChatGPT launched in June 2026, US-only. Guard: tag ChatGPT-sourced applicants as a separate source in the ATS and do not pay for a branded ChatGPT presence until you have 90 days of attributed applications and hires.
