What it is
Lawmatics is a CRM and client-intake platform for law firms. It owns the stretch between “someone filled in a form on the website” and “a signed client exists in the case-management system”: lead capture, qualification, conflict checks, consultation scheduling, engagement letters with e-signature, SMS and email nurture, and reporting on which marketing source produced which signed matter. It is not practice management. Matters, billing and trust accounting live in the system Lawmatics hands off to — Clio, MyCase, Filevine, Smokeball, SmartAdvocate, PracticePanther and about a dozen others. Founded in 2017 by CEO Matt Spiegel and based in San Diego, it has raised about $13M (a $2.5M seed and a $10M Series A).
In 2026 it added its own AI layer, now branded Merlin. Merlin Qualify scores each incoming lead against the firm’s criteria (practice area, case type, client profile, urgency) and routes the good ones first; it went live on 2026-03-24. Merlin Copilot builds automations and reports from plain-language prompts and reached general availability with the Merlin launch on 2026-07-09. Merlin Engage runs outreach agents over SMS, email, web chat and phone to keep a lead moving when nobody at the firm is free; it was still in beta at that launch. Merlin runs on OpenAI models through the developer API, and Lawmatics’ help center says Qualify reads form data and matter fields but never opens uploaded files.
Why it shows up in Legal Ops stacks
- Speed-to-lead without a night shift. The standard build is a web form that triggers an instant SMS acknowledgment, a qualification email and a scheduling link before staff arrive. For consumer practices, where prospects contact several firms at once, response time is the whole value case.
- Clean handoff into case management. Lawmatics became a Filevine Certified Integration Partner on 2026-02-12 with direct API access, and shipped a SmartAdvocate integration on 2026-03-17 that syncs contacts, notes, documents and custom fields when a matter converts. Intake data is entered once.
- Marketing attribution a managing partner can read. Source tracking runs from Google Ads, Meta Ads and CallRail through to signed matters, so the firm can see cost per signed case by channel instead of cost per click.
Pricing reality
lawmatics.com/pricing, checked 2026-09-30, publishes no subscription prices. It lists three plans:
- Essential — 3-user minimum, 500 contacts: intake, lead management, calendaring, custom forms, e-signature, SMS, tasks.
- Premium — 3-user minimum, 10,000 contacts: adds workflow and marketing automation, advanced conflict checking, email marketing, custom reporting and dashboards.
- Enterprise — 5-user minimum: adds a dedicated account manager.
Time & Billing is a separate add-on. Contracts are annual and there is no free trial. Aggregators still quote older firm-level price points of $1,788, $3,348 and $7,788 a year, and reviewers describe “a few hundred dollars a month” plus a one-time onboarding fee. Budget planning: treat roughly $3,300 a year as the realistic floor for a firm that needs automation (Premium), before AI (estimate).
The AI is the one part with a published rate card. Merlin bills in “AI Outcomes” shared across Qualify and Engage: 50 outcomes for $149 a month, 100 for $249, 200 for $399, 1,000 for $999, with overage at $1.25-$3.25 each and no rollover. The switch from credits to outcomes took effect 2026-09-08. A firm qualifying 200 leads a month therefore pays about $4,800 a year for Merlin on top of the subscription. More than one agent can bill an outcome on the same lead.
Best for
- Intake managers and managing partners at consumer-facing firms of 3-50 people — personal injury, family, estate planning, immigration, criminal defense — that buy leads and need them worked in minutes.
- Firms whose practice-management system has weak intake and that don’t want to switch it just to get better intake.
- Not for in-house legal teams (use Checkbox or Streamline AI for request intake), solos with a handful of leads a month, or firms that want intake and billing in one product.
Versus the alternatives
- vs Clio Grow. Clio’s own intake CRM, bundled into its upper plans. Pick Clio Grow when the firm already runs Clio and needs forms, e-signature and a pipeline; pick Lawmatics when you need multi-step nurture, marketing attribution, or a case-management system other than Clio.
- vs Lead Docket. Filevine’s separately licensed intake module, built for high-volume plaintiff firms. Filevine is the fastest-growing platform in legal case management: it raised $400M at an estimated $3B valuation in September 2025. Pick Lead Docket for a Filevine-only PI shop that cares more about call-center throughput than email nurture; pick Lawmatics when the firm spans practice areas.
- vs the built-in CRM in MyCase or Smokeball. Included on their upper tiers at no extra cost. Our rule of thumb: stay on the built-in option below roughly 50 leads a month; above that, a dedicated intake CRM earns its price.
Watch-outs
- Setup is a project, not a weekend. The most common complaint in reviews is the learning curve: automations can branch on almost anything, and building them is fiddly. Guard: get the onboarding fee and a named implementation specialist in the contract, and launch with one practice area’s intake flow before building the rest.
- The AI bill scales with your lead volume. Outcome pricing has no rollover, overage applies, and several agents can bill on one lead. Guard: start on the 50- or 100-outcome tier, read the Billing page weekly for the first month, and ask sales in writing what counts as an outcome for each agent.
- Seat minimums catch small firms. Three users minimum means a two-lawyer firm pays for a seat nobody uses. Guard: count the intake staff, not the lawyers, and ask whether attorneys who only sign engagement letters need a full seat.
- No official MCP server. Lawmatics has a documented REST API, but its MCP servers are community projects (Oktopeak’s, listed in the MCP Registry, and one other on GitHub). Guard: run any of them in read-only mode and keep them away from prospect data covered by privilege until Lawmatics ships its own.
