What it is

Westlaw Advantage is the research tier of Thomson Reuters’ Westlaw, launched on 5 August 2025 alongside CoCounsel Legal. Thomson Reuters calls it the final version of Westlaw, following Westlaw Edge (2018) and Westlaw Precision (2022). It keeps the editorial base every Westlaw tier has — KeyCite, the West Key Number System, headnotes — and adds an agentic layer on top of it. This page covers the research product only. The broader AI assistant that drafts, reviews documents and runs deposition prep is Thomson Reuters CoCounsel, which has its own entry.

The agentic layer is five named features:

  • Deep Research. You pose a research question; it drafts a multi-step plan you can read and adjust before it runs, then works through Westlaw (and Practical Law, where licensed) with KeyCite and Key Numbers as its tools. The output is a sourced report that covers arguments on both sides and the related case law, with every citation linking to the underlying document.
  • Litigation Document Analyzer. The successor to Quick Check. Upload a brief or an opposing motion; it checks every legal assertion against the cited source — not only quoted passages — flags mischaracterized or nonexistent authority, and, for opposing filings, suggests counterarguments with supporting authority.
  • Complaint Analyzer and Claims Explorer. One reads a complaint and maps the claims and the law behind them; the other surfaces every claim plausibly available on a set of facts.
  • AI Jurisdictional Surveys. Multi-jurisdiction comparisons generated from Westlaw content rather than assembled by an associate.

Precision customers do not get to stay put. Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel Legal FAQ states that Precision’s AI-Assisted Research is replaced by Advantage’s Deep Research, that Precision access is upgraded to Advantage, and that folders and research history carry over. A Canadian edition, Westlaw Advantage Canada, is live, and CoCounsel Legal with Deep Research on UK Westlaw and Practical Law launched on 26 January 2026.

  • The citator is the grounding. Deep Research uses KeyCite as a tool while it works, so the report reflects negative treatment the same way a lawyer’s manual search would. That is the specific thing a general-purpose model with web search does not have.
  • It catches bad citations in documents you did not write. The Litigation Document Analyzer is the most practical feature for a litigation team: running opposing counsel’s brief through it is a fast check for fabricated or overstated authority, which courts have sanctioned lawyers for missing.
  • It is reachable from other tools. Plaintiff-side platform Supio exposes Deep Research, AI Jurisdictional Surveys and the Litigation Document Analyzer from inside its own interface through CoCounsel Legal, and Thomson Reuters’ August 2026 CoCounsel Legal release added Westlaw Brief Builder — research to a first-draft brief — on top of Deep Research.

Pricing reality

Thomson Reuters publishes a small-firm rate: Westlaw Advantage starts at $256.75/month for single-circuit coverage and $399.75/month for all states and federal, with 12% off a two-year term and 18% off a three-year term. That online price is for new customers at firms of up to 10 attorneys. Above 10 attorneys, existing customers, and anyone adding CoCounsel is a sales quote. The pricing page does not say whether the figures are per attorney or which term they assume, so ask for both in writing.

Three anchors frame the number:

  • Versus Edge. Westlaw Edge with AI-Assisted Research lists at $155.35/month single-circuit and $266.50/month all states and federal on a three-year term (third-party reporting of Thomson Reuters’ pricing pages, June 2026). Advantage’s list prices are 1.5x to 1.65x those figures; if the Advantage list assumes a one-year term, the 18% three-year discount narrows the gap to about 1.2x to 1.35x.
  • With CoCounsel. A solo attorney buying Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials on all states and federal lands at $639.20/user/month on a one-year term; a five-attorney firm at about $2,091/month (third-party configurator snapshots, 2026).
  • Large firms. No published number. Westlaw renewals at AmLaw scale are multi-product negotiations, and the Advantage uplift is one line in them.

Best for

A US litigation team — small firm through AmLaw — that already treats KeyCite as its citator of record and wants research that runs multiple searches, reads the results and reports back with citations, plus an automatic check of every brief that crosses its desk. Also the default for an in-house legal team that needs 50-state surveys on regulatory questions more than it needs drafting.

Versus the alternatives

LexisNexis Protégé on Lexis+ AI is the other incumbent and the direct substitute: pick it when Shepard’s is already the firm’s citator and the Lexis contract renews regardless, because paying for two premium citators is the most expensive mistake in this category. Legora is the fastest-growing entrant in the segment; pick it when several lawyers need to research and draft in the same document with AI in the room. Harvey is the enterprise pole; pick it when the buyer is a BigLaw innovation team that wants one assistant across research, drafting and diligence, and accept that its primary-law access runs through its LexisNexis alliance, not Westlaw. vLex Vincent AI — Vincent by Clio since Clio’s acquisition of vLex closed in November 2025 — is the pick when a bar-association vLex Fastcase seat already covers the research base and only the AI line needs buying. Paxton is the pick for a solo who wants a published rate card, a 7-day trial and no Westlaw contract.

If none fit — a firm doing low-volume work that already holds Westlaw Edge — stay on Edge with AI-Assisted Research and spend the difference on a CoCounsel trial before committing to the upgrade.

Watch-outs

  • The independent accuracy data predates this product. The Stanford RegLab study (Magesh et al., Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, 2025) found Westlaw’s AI-Assisted Research — the feature Deep Research replaces — accurate on 42% of queries and hallucinating at up to 33%, against 65% accuracy for Lexis+ AI. No independent benchmark of Deep Research has been published. Guard: before signing, run ten research questions your team already knows the answer to, including two where the controlling authority was recently overturned, and check every citation in the report.
  • Thomson Reuters ends the old tier for you. Precision accounts move to Advantage, and there is no option to keep AI-Assisted Research. Guard: treat the upgrade as a renewal event — get the post-upgrade price, term and seat count in writing before your Precision term ends, and benchmark it against a Lexis quote so the move is a choice rather than a default.
  • The best features live in a separate SKU. Brief Builder, Deep Research Verify and the CoCounsel Legal MCP connection with Claude announced in August 2026 sit in CoCounsel Legal, not in the Westlaw Advantage plan. Guard: map each feature your team saw in the demo to the plan it ships in, and price the bundle you need rather than the research tier alone.
  • Deep Research is slow by design. It plans, executes and writes a report rather than returning a results list, so it is the wrong tool for a citation lookup or a quick headnote check. Guard: train associates to use it for open questions that justify a memo, and keep keyword search and KeyCite for known-authority lookups.
