Gainsight and Planhat are the two Customer Success platforms that land on the same enterprise shortlist. Both now ship an MCP server, so “which one connects to Claude” stopped being the routing question in April 2026. What replaced it is narrower and more useful: what the agent can see once it connects. Gainsight sells retention agents that already work against a packaged CS object model. Planhat gives you a data model you design yourself and an MCP server that reads all of it, custom objects included. The question is whether you want to buy retention agents or build them.

Where Gainsight wins

  • Agents that ship working, not parts you assemble. Gainsight’s agentic stack launched 2026-05-28 with three GA agents: the Staircase Risk and Expansion Analysts, which scan email, meetings, Slack threads, product usage, and support tickets for sentiment and risk; the Staircase Handoff Analyst; and a Community Moderation Agent. The Skilljar AI Tutor is in open beta, and Agent Studio — the plain-language agent builder — is still waitlisted. Planhat ships a model hub and a no-code workflow builder, which is the raw material for those same agents rather than the agents themselves.
  • Breadth across the whole post-sale surface. Vista-owned Gainsight bought into the adjacent categories: Skilljar for customer education (2025-04-02), inSided for community, Staircase AI for conversational signal, UpdateAI for meeting intelligence (July 2025). One vendor covers CS, product analytics, community, and LMS, each with its own MCP endpoint — CS and Staircase live, Skilljar, Communities, and Product Experience in open beta. Planhat covers CS, CRM, and services delivery, and has nothing in customer education or community.
  • The packaged object model is an asset when you don’t want to design one. Health Scorecards, CTAs, Success Plans, Playbooks, and Digital Journeys arrive with defaults and an opinion. The first six weeks are a configuration debate, not a schema design project, and there is a large consulting bench that already knows the shape.
  • Renewal and expansion forecasting is in the box on the Enterprise tier, alongside organizational mapping and sponsor tracking. Planhat models renewals on the data layer you build; Gainsight hands you the forecast object.

Where Planhat wins

  • The MCP server reads the model you designed. Planhat’s remote server at https://api.planhat.com/v1/mcp exposes list_model_records with filter, sort, limit, offset, and select semantics across the data model, plus create, update, and delete, and custom models are in scope. Gainsight’s CS MCP server cannot reach custom objects at all, cannot create fields or schema, and works one record at a time with no bulk operations. If your customer reality lives in custom objects — multi-entity accounts, usage-based products, project-based services — Gainsight’s agents are blind to the exact part that makes your business different from the reference customer.
  • Two-layer OAuth permissioning. Agent access is the intersection of the OAuth app’s configured scope and the connecting user’s Planhat role, so you narrow reach twice. Gainsight uses OAuth 2.0 with PKCE at the user level — real per-user auth, but no second app-level scope to tighten, and MCP queries count against the tenant API limit, which turns a chatty agent into a platform-wide rate problem.
  • One data layer from pre-sale to services delivery. CRM, CSP, and PSA modules read the same objects, so renewal forecasting, health scoring, and services margin stop being three reconciliations. Gainsight assumes Salesforce or HubSpot sits upstream and CS starts at handoff.
  • The AI platform is model-agnostic. Planhat’s 2026-08-09 AI platform upgrade added a model hub spanning frontier models from multiple providers plus custom enterprise instances, conversational analysis over emails, chats, and call transcripts, and agents governed by the same role-based access control as human teams. You pick the model; Gainsight picks it for you.

Pricing reality

Neither vendor publishes a price — both are quote-only, and Planhat’s pricing page carries “Enquire” buttons rather than numbers.

For Gainsight there is real transaction data. Vendr’s marketplace page, last updated February 2026 and based on 366 purchases, puts the median annual contract at $49,940 with a range of $14,040 to $189,417. That spread is driven by module count more than seat count. Published packaging bounds the standard tiers tightly: Essentials covers 10 full users at 100 customers per user, Enterprise covers 20 full users at 200 customers per user. A 30-CSM team is outside both before the conversation starts. Implementation is quoted separately, and third-party benchmarks put it at 20-40% of first-year cost.

Planhat keys off managed-account volume rather than pure seat count. Mid-market deployments land at roughly $25K-$45K per year on the Professional tier, with the broader band running $15K-$60K and enterprise above that. Add-ons — the upgraded AI platform, advanced service management, email marketing, advanced portals — plus usage-based automation executions mean the base quote is a floor, not the bill.

At comparable mid-market scope — 15 to 30 CSMs, CS only — Gainsight runs roughly 1.3-2x Planhat once first-year implementation is counted. The gap narrows at enterprise, where both go fully custom. The real multiplier is what each vendor charges for: Gainsight’s bill climbs per module, Planhat’s climbs per usage. Buy one Gainsight module and the two are close; buy four and they are not.

Implementation effort

Gainsight: 90-180 days, and the work is configuration — scorecard weighting, CTA rules, playbook logic, journey design. It needs an owner who actually likes administration, which Gainsight’s tiering quietly assumes exists. The failure mode is a system that goes live while nobody trusts the health score, because the weights were set once during rollout and never re-calibrated against churn that actually happened. Guard: ship three scorecard measures you can defend to a skeptical CRO, and add a fourth only when a CSM asks for it by name.

Planhat: 60-120 days and a named internal data owner. You design the schema before you get value, so an under-modeled Planhat is worse than a rigid tool — it looks configured while the relationships are wrong. Guard: land CSP first, prove health and renewal data against the model, then extend to CRM or PSA. If you enable the MCP server, start it read-only and turn on writes per object after a security review; Planhat’s server can delete records, which Gainsight’s cannot.

Bottom line

  • Pick Gainsight if you want retention agents working on day one against a standard SaaS customer shape, you are buying more than CS — education, community, or product analytics — and want one vendor and one renewal, and you have a named admin who owns configuration. It is the right call for a 25+ CSM organization north of $50M ARR with a formal CS practice.
  • Pick Planhat if your customer structure lives in custom objects, you want agents reading that model over MCP under two-layer permissioning, or you are consolidating CRM, CS, and services delivery onto one data layer. It rewards teams with the bandwidth to model properly and the intent to build their own agents rather than buy them.
  • Pick neither if you run fewer than 10 CSMs on a standard schema. ChurnZero or Vitally deliver more per dollar at that scale, and Gainsight’s entry tier caps at 10 full users regardless. Revisit at 15 or more CSMs and a defined health-score practice.

If you are choosing in a vacuum without those conditions, pick Gainsight. The GA agents and the packaged object model mean value arrives before configuration finishes, and most CS organizations’ customer data does fit a standard schema. Switch to Planhat when you can name the custom object your business runs on and point at the fact that Gainsight’s MCP server cannot see it. That test is concrete, it is checkable in an afternoon, and it is the one that actually decides this pair.
