What it is
Accurate Background, which now brands itself simply as Accurate, is the main challenger to the two enterprise incumbents after the 2024 consolidation, in which HireRight went private and Sterling was folded into First Advantage. Accurate is still privately owned and growing by acquisition: it bought CareerBuilder Employment Screening in 2020, with a minority investment from the Apax Digital Fund, and Orange Tree Employment Screening in June 2024. It does not disclose financials. Its company facts page, checked today, claims 16,000+ customers, 2,200+ employees, 60M+ searches a year, 60+ integrated solutions and 98.5% client retention.
The catalog is the standard enterprise one: county, state, federal and international criminal searches; employment, education and license verification; drug and health screening; motor vehicle records; I-9 and E-Verify; identity verification; and, since 2026, post-hire monitoring under the AccurateWatch name. The question it answers is can a mid-market or enterprise employer with high US hiring volume get HireRight-grade coverage and account management without signing with one of the two giants?
What changed in 2026
Three moves define the current product. On April 15, 2026 Accurate launched AccurateWatch, a continuous monitoring platform that went live with motor vehicle record monitoring across all 50 states: license suspensions, DUIs and expirations flagged as alerts, roster management and scheduled annual MVR reviews. The launch release names license, sanctions and criminal monitoring as part of the platform. Accurate’s company facts page now lists all three, but the release gave no availability dates for them. In March 2026 it shipped an enhanced identity verification product, which it says checks government-issued IDs and confirms candidate authenticity in under a minute, against the rise in proxy and deepfake candidates. In April 2026 it discontinued AccurateNow, its standalone self-serve brand for small businesses. A small-business offering is still on the main site, pay-as-you-go with no monthly minimum, but it is sold through sales.
On AI it has made hires rather than shipped a product: it appointed a Senior Director of Artificial Intelligence on June 4, 2026, and it has no announced agent or MCP layer. G2 named it a Leader in the Fall 2026 Enterprise Background Check grid, with a 4.4/5 rating.
Pricing
Accurate publishes no rate card, and there is no pricing page. Third-party estimates put a basic pre-employment check at roughly $30-45 per candidate and fuller packages at $60-100 per report, with individual manual verifications around $7-21 each (TechRadar’s review, from client and industry reports). Court and agency pass-through fees add about $10-20 per check, and rush orders cost extra. For contrast, Checkr publishes $29.99, $59.99 and $94.99 per report. Treat the Accurate figures as a band to test a quote against, not a budget.
The contract shape matters more than the sticker. Enterprise deals are annual agreements with packages priced per role family. So the real cost is decided by how many county searches and international verifications your packages trigger, not the headline per-report number.
Best for
TA operations and HR compliance leads at US-centric employers of roughly 500 to 20,000 people with high or seasonal hiring volume: healthcare systems, staffing firms, logistics and driver fleets, retail. The ATS is Workday, SmartRecruiters, iCIMS or Greenhouse, and they want a named account team, not a self-serve dashboard. AccurateWatch fits fleets especially well, because MVR monitoring was the first capability to ship and the one most fully specified.
It is the wrong pick for a startup running a few dozen checks a year, now that AccurateNow is gone. It is also the wrong pick for a multinational whose screening is mostly outside North America.
Versus the alternatives
First Advantage is the share leader after absorbing Sterling. It is publicly reported, and its 2026 revenue guidance is $1.67-1.71B. Pick it when the RFP needs the biggest global network and a vendor whose financials you can read every quarter. Pick Accurate when you would rather not be a mid-sized account inside a merger integration that runs through December 2026.
HireRight is the other enterprise incumbent, private since 2024. Pick HireRight when Latin America depth or FCA-regulated UK references decide the deal. Pick Accurate when hiring is mostly US and you want a challenger’s pricing pressure in the RFP. Run both: neither publishes prices, so competition is the only price discovery available.
Checkr is the API-first alternative with published rates. Pick Checkr when the hiring is US hourly volume, and the goal is automated adjudication of clean reports with no human touch. Pick Accurate when you need account management, broader verification services and an HCM-embedded order flow more than a developer API.
Certn is the fastest-growing entrant in the segment. Pick Certn for international screening at mid-market scale with usage-based pricing. For small US employers, GoodHire is the self-serve option AccurateNow used to compete with.
If none of them fit, check the policy before the vendor: a package that runs a seven-year, every-county criminal search for every role is slow and expensive anywhere.
Watch-outs
- The coverage numbers don’t agree with each other. Accurate’s global searches page says “all 195 countries” with a presence in 18. Its press boilerplate says 240+ countries and territories, and its identity product cites 200+. None of those tells you turnaround or cost in a given country. Guard: require a per-country exhibit in the contract with price, typical turnaround and fulfilment method (direct or partner), for every country you hired in over the last 12 months.
- Accuracy disputes carry real legal exposure in this category. Accurate paid $487,000 into a class settlement over reports that included criminal records already removed from the public record (claims closed January 30, 2024). Guard: require that the vendor re-verify dispositions at the source before any report goes out, that expunged and sealed records are filtered, and that a dispute SLA shorter than the FCRA’s 30-day reinvestigation window is in the contract.
- AccurateWatch’s scope beyond MVR is not dated. Only MVR monitoring was specified at launch. Continuous criminal monitoring also raises consent and state-law questions; California, for one, limits what can be reported. Guard: demo each monitoring type you plan to buy against your own roster, get per-person monthly pricing in writing, and have counsel approve the employee consent and adverse-action flow before enrolling anyone.
- Former AccurateNow accounts lost their product. Self-serve customers were moved off a standalone platform in April 2026. Guard: if you were on AccurateNow, re-paper under a main Accurate agreement or move. Either way, export historical reports and adverse-action records now, since you have to keep them for your own record-retention obligations.
- The identity check needs testing against your fraud pattern. The vendor describes the IDV product as document validation plus authenticity confirmation; it does not publish whether every package includes a biometric liveness step. Guard: ask which packages include a selfie-to-ID liveness match. For remote roles exposed to AI interview fraud, add Persona if it does not, and track the candidate experience drop-off the extra step causes.
