What it is

HireRight is the enterprise incumbent in employment background screening, and it sells coverage, not a product experience. One contract buys criminal searches at county, statewide, federal and international level; employment, education, reference and license verification; drug and DOT testing; motor vehicle records; right-to-work and I-9/E-Verify; and post-hire criminal and arrest monitoring in the US. HireRight claims 200+ countries and territories, about half of the Fortune 100 as customers, and 70+ ATS and HCM integrations.

The question it answers is narrow: can one screening vendor run a defensible, locally compliant check on a candidate in Frankfurt, São Paulo and Ohio, and return all three through Workday? For a regulated multinational, that is the whole buying decision. For a 200-person US company, it is a question nobody asked.

General Atlantic and Stone Point Capital took HireRight private at an enterprise value of about $1.7B, closing on June 28, 2024. Since then the new owners have bought in two directions. In April 2025 HireRight acquired ClearChecks and folded it into BackgroundChecks.com, its self-service brand for small and mid-sized employers. In October 2025 it bought BGC Brasil, a fulfillment partner since 2022 with direct access to more than 200 national and international research sources. The first deal pushes it down-market into Checkr’s territory; the second deepens the Latin America coverage that is its actual moat.

Two brands, two price lists

HireRight the enterprise brand publishes no prices. Every deal is quoted, with annual commitments and per-country add-ons. Vendr’s anonymized contract data puts basic packages (identity plus employment history) at $15-35 per screening, packages that add criminal records at $30-65, and full packages with credit, education and drug testing at $60-150+. International components add $50-300+ per country. Those are third-party ranges, not a rate card; use them to test a quote, not to build a budget.

BackgroundChecks.com is the same parent with the opposite contract. Pricing starts at $24.99 per report, pay-as-you-go, with no setup fee, no monthly minimum and no contract. Court fees pass through at cost, adverse action tooling is included, and the Greenhouse, Lever, JazzHR, Jobvite and Workable integrations carry no extra charge. Volume pricing starts at 100+ checks a month.

The practical consequence: a US company running a few hundred checks a year should not negotiate with HireRight enterprise at all. The self-service brand gets the same parent’s data sources without the annual minimum. Enterprise is worth its price only when multi-country coverage, dedicated account management and HCM-embedded ordering are requirements rather than preferences.

Best for

Talent acquisition operations and HR compliance leads at multinational employers, roughly 1,000+ employees hiring in several countries, where the screen has to satisfy a regulator: financial services roles needing FCA-regulated references in the UK, DOT/FMCSA driver screening through the Tenstreet integration, or healthcare hiring with license verification. The ATS or HCM is Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle or UKG, and procurement wants one screening vendor worldwide.

It is the wrong pick for US-only high-volume hourly hiring. There the job is speed and automated adjudication, and Checkr is built for it.

Versus the alternatives

First Advantage is the share leader since closing its $2.2B Sterling acquisition in October 2024; in its Q2 2026 results it raised full-year revenue guidance to $1.67-1.71B. It is the direct substitute for HireRight in a global RFP. Pick First Advantage when you want the larger combined network and a publicly reporting vendor; pick HireRight when Latin America depth (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico) or its UKG and Tenstreet integrations decide the workflow. Run both in the RFP; neither gives list prices, so competition is the only price discovery available.

Checkr is the API-first alternative with published rates: $29.99, $59.99 and $94.99 per report. Pick Checkr when hiring is mostly US, volume is high and the goal is clearing clean reports without a human. Pick HireRight when more than a handful of countries are in scope, the case Checkr handles worst.

Certn is the fastest-growing entrant in the segment, second on Deloitte Canada’s Technology Fast 50 for 14,533% revenue growth between 2018 and 2022, with coverage across 200+ countries. Pick Certn when international screening is needed at mid-market scale and the enterprise minimums of HireRight or First Advantage do not fit.

If none of them fit, the problem is usually the screening policy, not the vendor. A package that runs a seven-country education check for a role that does not need one is slow and expensive at every provider.

Watch-outs

  • Accuracy and dispute handling are HireRight’s recurring legal exposure. It paid $28.375M to settle Ryals v. HireRight Solutions over missed consumer notices and inadequate dispute investigations, and a $2.6M civil penalty in a 2012 FTC case over criminal records attributed to the wrong people. Rodriguez v. HireRight (W.D. Tex.), filed October 2025, alleged a misattributed aggravated-assault conviction and settled in 2026. CFPB complaints against HireRight Solutions, Inc. went from 34 in 2023 and 32 in 2024 to 92 in 2025, and reached 105 by mid-September 2026. Guard: require county-level record confirmation before any adverse action, write a dispute-resolution SLA into the contract that is shorter than the FCRA’s 30-day reinvestigation window, and pull the CFPB complaint count every quarter as a vendor-quality signal.
  • International turnaround will break an offer timeline. HireRight’s own candidate FAQ gives 10-15 working days as typical in EMEA and up to six weeks for FCA-regulated references. Guard: start screening at conditional offer rather than at acceptance, set per-country turnaround SLAs in the contract with a service credit attached, and give recruiters a country lookup table so start dates are set against real verification times.
  • Quote-only pricing hides the per-country cost. A package priced for the US grows fast once three international employment verifications are attached. Guard: require a per-country rate card as a contract exhibit, cap international add-ons, and model the blended cost against the last 12 months of actual hires by country before signing any annual minimum.
  • The identity layer is document-based. HireRight’s published identity services validate passports and 115+ national identity documents and confirm right-to-work; the catalog lists no biometric liveness step. That leaves the proxy candidate and deepfaked interview described in AI interview fraud outside the check. Guard: for remote roles, add biometric verification from Persona or run in-person document inspection at onboarding, and track the candidate experience drop-off that the extra step adds.
