What it is

Tacton is a configure-price-quote platform built for manufacturers of engineered, configurable products: trucks, compressors, cranes, mining equipment, industrial machinery. Its core is a constraint solver that knows which combinations of components, attributes and options can physically be built, and it carries that model through to a build-ready bill of materials and, via Tacton Design Automation, to generated 2D drawings and 3D models inside SolidWorks, PTC Creo and Autodesk Inventor. It sits in the same category as Salesforce Revenue Cloud, Oracle CPQ and SAP CPQ, but it resembles a product-configuration engine with quoting on top more than a sales tool with a configurator bolted on. The company has operated since 1998, is headquartered in Stockholm and Chicago, and has been majority-owned by Rubicon Technology Partners since a 2023 deal in which prior owner GRO Capital reinvested. Named customers include ABB, Scania, Tetra Pak, Siemens, Atlas Copco and Daimler Truck.

Why it shows up in RevOps stacks

Because SaaS-shaped CPQ tools break on physical products. DealHub and Nue are strong at subscriptions, ramps and usage pricing; they do not model whether a 4-axle chassis can take a given crane arm and hydraulic pack, or push the resulting configuration to ERP as a manufacturable order. Tacton does, and the CRM stays the system of record: it runs inside Salesforce and connects to Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM and ERP, SAP S/4HANA and ECC, and Oracle through Tacton-hosted connectors or its Workato-based “Connect to Anything” layer, pulling inventory, lead times and cost data back into the quote.

Two 2026 releases matter for buyers:

  • AI Product Modeling Assistant (5 May 2026): ingests spreadsheets, technical specs, PDFs and legacy data and drafts a product model Tacton says is typically 70–80% complete before a modeler reviews and approves it. Tacton claims a 50% cut in modeling effort; customer Alimak reported 40–80% faster model building. These are vendor and customer-reference figures, not independent benchmarks, but they target the real bottleneck: modeling, not quoting.
  • Portfolio Performance Intelligence (announced 30 June 2026, available July 2026): analytics that connect configuration choices to win rates and margin, so product management can see which options win deals and which add complexity without profit.

Tacton was named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for CPQ Applications (published 21 January 2026, 16 vendors) for the fourth consecutive year; Oracle, Infor and Conga also announced Leader placements.

Pricing reality

There is no list price. Tacton prices a subscription on named users, configuration complexity and integration scope, and every deal is quoted. Review-site “starting at” figures range from about $100 per user/month to $1,500 per month, which tells you only that no one publishes a real number. Treat the license as the smaller line. Tacton’s own staff put implementation at six months to a year depending on scope, and product modeling, ERP and CAD integration, and partner services sit outside the license. For budgeting, an estimate: plan year-one services at or above year-one license until you have a scoped SOW.

Best for

A sales-operations or commercial-excellence lead at a manufacturer with engineer-to-order or configure-to-order products, a dealer or direct sales force, and an ERP that must receive a buildable BOM, typically a business where a wrong configuration costs a re-engineering cycle, not a credit note. ROI is strongest when quotes today wait days on an application engineer and when CAD drawings ship with the proposal.

Not for

Software, subscription or services companies. If your “product” is seats, credits and support tiers, Tacton is the wrong tool and DealHub, Nue or Revenue Cloud fit at far lower services cost. Also not for manufacturers with a flat catalog of a few hundred SKUs and no option dependencies; a CRM price book plus a document tool such as PandaDoc does that. And not if you need contracts, billing and approvals in the same product: independent reviewers note Tacton is thin on deal governance, contract and billing workflows, so plan to keep those in CRM, Conga or your ERP.

Versus the alternatives

  • Oracle CPQ — the longest-standing Leader in Gartner’s quadrant. Pick it when you already run Oracle Fusion ERP and want one vendor from quote to order.
  • SAP CPQ — the default when SAP S/4HANA is the backbone and procurement prefers SAP paper; Tacton integrates with SAP too, so choose on configurator depth in a proof of concept rather than ERP loyalty alone.
  • Salesforce Revenue Cloud — pick it when your products are moderately configurable and you want contracts, orders and billing native to Salesforce. Its new Constraint Studio narrows the gap but has no CAD design automation.
  • Logik.ai (ServiceNow) — the newest serious entrant for configured products, acquired by ServiceNow in 2025. Pick it if ServiceNow is your sales-and-order platform and your configuration is complex but not CAD-driven.
  • Conga — now carrying PROS’ pricing business; pick it when price optimization and contract lifecycle matter more than engineering-grade configuration.

The rule: if the quote must produce a drawing or a buildable BOM, start with Tacton; if it must produce a contract and an invoice, start elsewhere. Background: what CPQ covers, the deal desk, and the quote-to-cash stack.

Watch-outs

  • The product model is the project. Value depends on someone encoding every rule and dependency, and that knowledge usually lives with two or three senior engineers. Guard: name an internal model owner with protected time before signing, and scope the first release to one product family; use the AI Modeling Assistant to draft models, but require engineer sign-off on every rule it proposes.
  • The AI numbers are vendor numbers. The 50% and 70–80% figures come from Tacton and reference customers. Guard: in the proof of concept, feed the assistant your own spec sheets for one product line and measure the review hours against your current modeling time.
  • Integration debt across three systems. CRM, ERP and CAD each need a working connector, and the ERP order handoff is where projects slip. Guard: make a tested CRM-to-ERP order with a correct BOM a go-live payment milestone, not a phase-two item.
  • PE ownership. Rubicon has owned the majority since 2023; a later sale is a normal private-equity outcome. Guard: negotiate a renewal price cap and a data-export clause covering product models in a reusable format.
