What it is
Zoho Desk is the ticket-first helpdesk from Zoho Corporation, the privately held Indian software company behind Zoho CRM, Zoho Recruit, Books and the Zoho One suite. It covers the Zendesk-shaped feature set: email, web forms, social and chat channels feeding one ticket queue, SLAs and multi-level escalations, a knowledge base and community forum, stage-gated processes (Blueprint), multi-department routing, and telephony on the higher editions. The AI layer is Zia, Zoho’s in-house assistant, plus Zia Agents, Zoho’s agent builder.
The question it answers: “We need a real helpdesk, our budget is closer to $10 a seat than $50, and maybe we already run Zoho CRM. Is Zoho Desk good enough, and what AI do we actually get on our edition?” For budget support teams and Zoho-stack companies, the answer is usually yes. The catch is that the AI you get depends heavily on the edition you buy.
What changed in 2026
- Zia AI moved down the price ladder on 2026-07-07. Per Zoho’s community announcement, sentiment analysis, auto-tagging and the Answer Bot now start on Standard. Anomaly detection, field prediction and the Zoho-hosted Zia model start on Professional. Zia Actions and the Deluge scripting assistant are Enterprise-only. Bring-your-own-key generative AI through ChatGPT starts on Express.
- AI agents on every paid edition. Zoho’s pricing page lists AI Agents from Express up, running on your own LLM key or on Zoho’s models with “up to 30M free tokens/month.” Zoho’s own Desk release notes describe two support agents, Support Specialist (drafts knowledge-base replies and reassigns to a human when the answer is missing) and Resolution Expert (writes the root cause onto the ticket), and listed both as available on request.
- MCP access through Zoho MCP. Zoho MCP lets you build your own MCP server, choose which Desk tools to expose, and connect it to Claude as a custom connector over OAuth. Calls count against Desk’s normal API limits.
Pricing
USD list prices per agent per month, billed annually, as published on zoho.com (the INR price list on the same page scales the same way):
- Free: $0 for up to 3 agents, with a limited feature set built around email ticketing. The 3 free seats don’t carry over into a paid plan.
- Express: $7. Capped at 5 agents. Email, social and web forms, workflows, escalations, AI agents and BYOK generative AI. No chat, telephony, Blueprint or multi-department.
- Standard: $14. Adds the chat widget, knowledge base, community forum, and the Answer Bot plus sentiment and auto-tag AI.
- Professional: $23. Adds telephony, Blueprint, multi-department, round-robin assignment, webhooks, the Zoho-hosted Zia model and light agents.
- Enterprise: $40. Adds Zoho SalesIQ live chat, multi-level IVR, sandbox, custom modules, skill-based assignment, Zia Actions, and 50 free light agents.
Zoho says annual billing saves up to 34%, so monthly billing costs noticeably more per seat. Telephony runs through Zoho Voice or a third-party provider, and call minutes bill separately.
Real-world band: Professional is the tier most teams need, because that is where telephony, routing across departments and the hosted Zia model start. A 10-agent team pays $2,760 a year on annual billing. The same team pays $6,600 on Freshdesk Pro ($55) or Zendesk Suite Team ($55), before either vendor’s AI meter. Enterprise for 10 agents is $4,800 a year, still under the Freshdesk Pro bill.
Best for
A support lead or CS operations manager running a 3-to-50-agent team that needs proper ticketing with SLAs and routing on a budget, especially a company already paying for Zoho CRM or Zoho One. The scoped use case: run email, web form and chat requests through one SLA-tracked queue, have the Answer Bot deflect the routine questions from the knowledge base, and see the customer’s deals and invoices from Zoho CRM and Books on the ticket without a sync tool in between.
Not for you if your agents will only adopt a modern, lightweight inbox, or if you need a deep app marketplace and workforce management above about 100 agents.
Versus the alternatives
- Zendesk is the market leader. Pick it above roughly 100 agents, or when you need workforce management, multi-brand routing and the largest marketplace. Expect to pay 2.4x to 5x Zoho’s seat price, and per-resolution fees for its AI agents.
- Freshdesk is the number-two ticket-first helpdesk and the nearest like-for-like rival. Pick it when you want a cleaner UI and Freddy AI. Note that Freddy Copilot is a per-agent add-on and the Freddy AI Agent bills per session.
- Intercom is the AI-first entrant the segment now benchmarks against, at $0.99 per Fin resolution. Pick it when chat-led, high-volume deflection is the whole problem and you’ll pay per outcome for a stronger agent.
- Help Scout and Hiver win for small, email-led teams that care more about a friendly shared inbox than ticket admin depth. Front wins when conversations are account threads across many channels.
The rule: pick Zoho Desk when price per seat or Zoho-suite integration decides the deal, and the team can live with a dense admin UI.
Watch-outs
- The edition decides the AI. The Zoho-hosted Zia model starts at Professional. On Express and Standard, generative replies and summaries run on your own OpenAI key, which adds a second bill and a second data processor. Guard: list the AI features in your business case, map each to the 2026-07-07 edition table, and price the tier that holds all of them, not the $7 headline.
- Express caps at 5 agents and drops core helpdesk features. No chat, telephony, Blueprint or multi-department on Express, and Standard still lacks telephony and Blueprint. Guard: if you expect to pass 5 agents or add phone support within a year, budget for Professional from day one.
- The free AI token allowance has no published overage rate on the Desk pricing page. Guard: before an annual commitment, get Zoho’s per-token or per-credit price above 30M tokens a month in writing, and set an alert on token usage in the first month.
- Pre-built support agents are on request. Zoho listed Support Specialist and Resolution Expert as on-request rather than self-serve. Guard: ask your Zoho rep to enable them in the trial org, and run them on a week of real tickets before you count deflection in the ROI.
- Admin depth comes with a dense UI. Blueprint, Deluge custom functions and custom modules give admins real control, and reviewers consistently describe the interface as cluttered compared with Freshdesk or Help Scout. Guard: run the trial with two frontline agents, not just the admin, and time how long the 10 most common ticket actions take.
- The MCP route is build-your-own. Through Zoho MCP, Claude can only use the Desk tools you expose, and every call draws on the same API quota as your integrations. Guard: expose read tools first, keep reply-sending tools off until you’ve reviewed agent output, and check your edition’s daily API limit before connecting an assistant.
