What it is

Zoho Recruit is an ATS and recruiting CRM sold per recruiter license by Zoho Corporation, the privately held Chennai company behind Zoho CRM, Books, and Desk. It ships as two editions on one product: Corporate HR for in-house talent teams, and Staffing Agency for firms placing candidates with clients. The agency edition carries client and vendor portals, submission tracking against job orders, and a Professional tier the corporate edition does not have. The AI layer is Zia, Zoho’s assistant, which handles candidate matching against an open req, resume screening, profile and email summaries, job-description drafting, and generated role-specific assessments. Zoho also runs an official MCP server at zoho.com/recruit/mcp.html connecting Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code to candidate records, job openings, and pipeline stages, with each user’s AI access bounded by their existing Recruit role.

The reason this entry exists in September 2026 is a competitor’s obituary. Freshworks announced on 7 January 2026 that it would end Freshteam and stop renewals from 7 March 2026, steering those HR customers toward Freshservice for Business Teams — an ITSM product, not an ATS. Contracts expiring before the cutoff got one final one-year renewal, which runs the longest tails to April 2027. Zoho answered with a Freshteam-to-Zoho-Recruit migration article in its help portal and a competitive page offering free onboarding consultation and zero-cost data migration. If you are a Freshteam admin with a 2027 wall in your calendar, Zoho Recruit is the closest like-for-like landing spot at the price you were paying.

Why it shows up in Recruiting stacks

  • The cheapest credible paid seat in the SMB ATS segment. $25 per recruiter per month on annual billing puts Zoho Recruit an order of magnitude under Workable, whose SMB entry point is $299/month for a company up to 20 employees, and under Pinpoint at $600/month. Manatal undercuts it at $15.
  • Official MCP rather than a community wrapper. Zoho ships the server itself, scoped to Recruit roles and permissions. Workable, Recruitee, Teamtailor, and Pinpoint ship none. That matters if your screening loop already runs inside Claude and you want it reading live pipeline state instead of a pasted CSV.
  • One product covers in-house and agency desks. A firm that hires for itself and also places contractors buys one system instead of two. The agency edition’s client portal and submission tracking are the parts BambooHR and other in-house-only tools have no answer for.
  • Zia sits on the screening step, not the chat box. Candidate Matches shortlists against a posted req and re-ranks on experience, skills, or location, and searches the existing database for passive matches. Auto-Trigger fires a screening assessment the moment a candidate applies to a req that has one attached.

Pricing reality

Checked on zoho.com/recruit/pricing.html on 16 September 2026. The Free plan is perpetual: 1 active job per recruiter license, 256MB storage, 5 email templates, no resume parsing, no AI, no integrations, and no add-ons. Paid, per recruiter per month on annual billing:

  • Corporate HR — Standard $25 (10 active jobs per license), Enterprise $50 (20 active jobs per license).
  • Staffing Agency — Standard $25 (100 active jobs), Professional $50 (250), Enterprise $75 (750).

Monthly billing runs roughly 20% higher — $30, $60, and $90 on the agency ladder.

Put those ladders side by side and the real pricing lever is not the seat. It is active job openings per license: Corporate HR buys one tenth the job capacity of the agency edition at the identical $25. A 6-recruiter in-house team on Standard gets 60 concurrent reqs and never notices. The same team running 25 reqs against 2 licensed recruiters hits the wall, and the fix is more licenses or job-opening blocks sold in tens.

Add-ons move the bill. Client portal runs about $6 per license per month, video interviews about $12 per job slot, 5GB extra storage $4.60, and data backup $11.50. Premium support costs 20% of your license fee and enterprise support 25%. A 3-seat Standard team with common add-ons lands near $110/month against a $75 sticker — 46% over. Even at that inflated figure, 10 corporate seats at Standard come to roughly $3,000 a year before add-ons, against Workable’s $299/month floor.

Watch-outs

  • The free tier is a demo, not a destination. One active job per license with no resume parsing and no integrations is functional only for a solo recruiter filling one role at a time. Guard: count your concurrent open reqs before signing up, and if the number is above one, budget Standard from day one rather than discovering the ceiling in week two.
  • The active-job cap bites before the seat count does. Corporate HR Standard stops at 10 reqs per license. Guard: size against your peak concurrent reqs over the last 12 months, not the average, and price the extra 10-job blocks into year one if the peak runs over.
  • Zia is AI added to a 2009 ATS, not an AI-native pipeline. Zoho Recruit predates the current generation and the UX shows its age against Ashby or Manatal. Guard: run a two-week trial on a live req with a recruiter who will actually use it daily, and score the clicks-per-candidate-advance, not the feature list.
  • Migration is free but not instant. Zoho’s own guide requires admin access on both sides and a specific import order — users, candidates, clients and contacts, job openings, then interviews, notes, tasks, and attachments — to keep record relationships intact. Guard: run the export-and-import against a sandbox and reconcile candidate counts per req before you cut the Freshteam cord.

Best for

Talent leads and HR generalists at companies of 5-200 employees running fewer than 10 concurrent reqs per licensed recruiter, especially Freshteam refugees who need a like-for-like ATS at a comparable price and Zoho One tenants who already pay for the suite. It is also the right pick for a small staffing firm that wants client portals and submission tracking without Bullhorn money.

Not for you if structured interviewing and hiring analytics are the reason you are buying — Ashby and Greenhouse do scorecards, interview kits, and funnel reporting properly, and Zoho Recruit does not. Also not for you if hiring is a module you want inside an HRIS you already run, which is the BambooHR case, or if you run a high-volume contract desk with timesheets and invoicing, where Recruit CRM and Bullhorn have the back office Zoho Recruit lacks.
