What it is

ClickUp is a work-management suite that puts tasks, docs, chat, whiteboards, dashboards and forms in one workspace, with an AI layer called Brain² on top. Brain² answers questions over everything in the workspace, writes and summarises, and lets you switch between Claude, GPT and Gemini models, or let it pick the model per job. ClickUp says it runs zero-retention agreements with its AI subprocessors and does not let them train on your data.

The agent story moved fast in 2026. Super Agents, which take an assignment like a teammate and work through tasks, docs and chat with the permissions of the workspace, shipped in February. Brain² followed in June as ClickUp’s biggest release of the year. In December 2025 ClickUp bought the AI coding startup Codegen, made its founder Jay Hack Head of AI and shut the standalone Codegen product in January. ClickUp also runs a hosted MCP server (https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp, OAuth only, all plans), so Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT can read and update tasks from outside.

The company is private and independent. In May 2026 CEO Zeb Evans cut 22% of staff, including product, engineering and customer-facing roles, and said the business was “the strongest it’s ever been”; that is his framing, not audited numbers.

Why ops teams end up here

The usual question is: ClickUp, Asana or monday.com for an ops team that wants agents inside its work tracker, and how far do the monthly AI credits go? ClickUp’s answer is consolidation at a low seat price. A RevOps team can keep the deal-desk queue, the territory-planning doc and the weekly pipeline dashboard in one Space, then assign a Super Agent to chase stalled approval tasks and post a Monday summary to chat. A legal-ops team can run contract intake through a ClickUp Form into a task list with AI Fields that tag contract type and urgency. A recruiting coordinator can track interview loops and have the AI Notetaker write up debriefs into the candidate’s task.

Pricing reality

Checked on clickup.com/pricing on 30 October 2026. Prices are per user per month; the first figure is annual billing, the second the regular monthly price:

  • Free Forever — $0, unlimited members, 60MB storage, 100 automation actions per workspace a month, 500 AI credits per workspace.
  • Core — $9 / $12. Unlimited storage, 1,000 automation actions a month, 1,000 AI credits per user a month, Brain² premium models on trial only.
  • Business — $17 / $25. 10,000 automation actions, Google SSO, premium models, unlimited standard-model use (fair use), 1,500 credits per user a month.
  • Enterprise — custom quote. SAML/Okta SSO, SCIM, audit trails, data residency, HIPAA with a BAA, 3,000 credits per user a month.
  • Max — $100 / $120. Everything in Enterprise plus 10,000 credits per user, unlimited AI Automations and AI Fields, custom skills and MCP connections.

Credits are pooled across the workspace. Super Agents, Artifacts and video or audio generation draw credits on every plan; Brain² chat does not. Extra credits cost $10 per 10,000, and the pricing page shows auto top-up switched on.

A worked band: 25 ops users on Business cost 25 × $17 × 12, about $5,100 a year, or $7,500 on monthly billing, with a pool of 37,500 credits a month. The same 25 seats on Asana Advanced list at about $7,500 a year on annual billing. Moving the team to Max costs $30,000 a year, so buy Max only for the few people who live in agents, not the whole workspace.

Best for

An ops manager or RevOps lead at a 20-200 person company who wants projects, docs, intake forms and AI agents in one tool at a lower seat price than Asana or monday.com, and has someone who will own the workspace structure.

Not for

A company that needs a tightly governed tool for executives and cross-functional programmes with little configuration: Asana is the calmer choice. And not for engineering-led teams whose real need is fast issue tracking; Linear is the better fit there.

Versus the alternatives

  • Asana — one of the two share leaders, public, with goals, portfolios and AI Teammates. Pick it when governance, polish and executive reporting matter more than seat price.
  • monday.com — the other share leader, about $1.5B ARR. Pick it when the same team also wants a CRM or service desk on the same boards.
  • Notion — the fastest-growing challenger from the docs side. Pick it when the work is mostly writing and knowledge, and projects are light.
  • Airtable — pick it when the job is a relational database of records rather than a task tracker.
  • Linear — pick it for product and engineering teams that want speed and opinionated workflows.

Watch-outs

  • Upgrades bill every member. ClickUp’s FAQ says upgrading means upgrading the whole workspace, all members included. Guard: before you buy, audit the member list and convert occasional users to guests (Business gives five guest seats per additional paid user, plus unlimited read-only guests).
  • Pooled credits drain quietly. One busy Super Agent can use a team’s allowance, and auto top-up keeps spending. Guard: turn off auto top-up or set a cap at rollout, then read credit use weekly for the first month before adding more agents.
  • ClickUp’s own pages disagree on AI pricing. The Brain² page still quotes a $9 Brain add-on and a $28 “Everything AI” plan, and the MCP docs name plans (Business Plus, Enterprise Plus) the pricing page no longer lists. The help centre also gives Max 5,000 Super Agent credits per user a month, against 10,000 on the pricing page. Third-party trackers reported in October 2026 that the old lineup (Unlimited plus AI add-ons) was still being shown to some visitors alongside the new one, which looks like a live pricing test. Guard: get the credit allowance, model access and MCP limits written into the order form, not taken from a web page.
  • MCP calls are capped per day. Business allows 1,000 tool calls per client in a rolling 24 hours, Core 300, and limits cannot be reset. Guard: run bulk syncs through the REST API or Zapier, and keep MCP for interactive agent work.
  • Compliance features sit on Enterprise. SAML SSO, SCIM, audit trails and the HIPAA BAA are Enterprise and Max only. Guard: legal-ops and recruiting teams handling contracts or candidate data should price Enterprise from day one, not plan to upgrade later.
  • Support capacity after the May 2026 layoff is unproven. Customer-facing roles were part of the 22% cut. Guard: ask for a named support contact and written response times in any contract above Business.
