What it is

Asana is a work-management platform: tasks, projects, portfolios and goals sitting on one data model the company calls the Work Graph. Since 2025 it has added three AI layers on top. AI Studio is a no-code builder for “smart workflows” that run an LLM step when a task is created, moved or updated. AI Teammates are named agents with their own permissions, spend controls and audit trail; Asana ships more than 30 prebuilt ones for marketing, operations, IT and professional services. Asana Dash is a personal assistant that turns meeting notes, Slack threads and email into tasks. All three were bundled as “Agentic Work Management”, announced on 4 June 2026, with AI Teammates and AI Studio available that day and Dash rolling out in phases.

It is a public company (NYSE: ASAN) led by CEO Dan Rogers. Q2 fiscal 2027 revenue, reported on 3 September 2026, was $216.4M, up 10% year on year, with full-year guidance of $858.5-863.5M. Customers spending $100,000 or more a year grew 16% to 890, but overall dollar-based net retention was 97%, meaning the existing base still shrinks slightly before new logos. On the earnings call management said AI Studio and AI Teammates made up about 25% of net new ARR, up from 17% the quarter before. In May 2026 Asana acquired StackAI, a workflow-automation startup, to push its agents into CRMs, ERPs and other enterprise systems.

The fork it resolves

The question this page answers: is Asana AI Studio a real workflow-automation layer, or do we still need Asana plus Zapier?

Inside Asana, AI Studio is real. It replaces the Zapier zaps most ops teams build around a project tool: classify an incoming request, route it to the right project and owner, set priority and due date, draft a brief from a form submission, flag tasks missing an approval. Those run on task events, read the task’s full context, and need no external account or API key. Where it stops is writing to other systems. If the workflow has to create a record in Salesforce, update a contract in a CLM or post to an ERP, keep Zapier, Make or n8n for that leg. The StackAI acquisition is aimed at that gap, but buy on what ships today, not on the acquisition rationale.

A use case worth buying it for

A 15-person marketing-ops or legal-ops intake desk that receives 300+ requests a month through a form. An AI Studio rule reads each submission, tags request type and risk, assigns it to the right specialist’s queue, and drafts a first-pass brief into the task description. A prebuilt AI Teammate reviews overdue tasks each morning and posts a summary to the team’s Slack channel. Leadership sees cycle time and backlog per request type in a portfolio dashboard, with no separate automation tool to maintain.

Pricing reality

Personal is free for up to 2 users. Starter costs $10.99 and Advanced $24.99 per seat per month billed annually, or $13.49 and $30.49 month to month; Enterprise and Enterprise+ are quoted. Portfolios, goals, approvals and time tracking start at Advanced, so Advanced is the real floor for a cross-functional ops team. A 25-seat Advanced plan lists at about $7,500 a year.

AI is metered on two meters. AI Studio Basic is included with a pooled monthly allowance per billing account, not per seat: 50,000 credits on Starter, 75,000 on Advanced and 200,000 on Enterprise. Asana prices a credit at roughly 100 tokens, with multipliers by model. AI Studio Plus adds 100,000 credits a month; AI Studio Pro is annual-only at 5 million credits a quarter. Workflows run on to 130% of the purchased allowance, then pause. AI Teammate and Dash requests are separate: 5 per user per month, capped at 50 per account on Starter and Advanced and 250 on Enterprise. Extra requests cost $0.50 each in prepaid packs or $0.60 pay as you go.

Seats are sold in steps: single seats up to 5, then blocks of 5 up to 30, then blocks of 10 up to 100. Seven users pay for ten.

Best for

The ops lead at a 50-1,000 person company running cross-functional intake and delivery work — marketing ops, legal ops, people ops, PMO — who wants AI triage and routing inside the work tool, owned by ops, without a separate automation contract.

Not for

Software teams that live in issues and sprints, or a team whose real need is automation across CRM, ERP and billing systems with the project tool as one endpoint among many.

Versus the alternatives

  • monday.com — the largest public pure-play rival, with about $1.5B ARR. Pick it when the same team also wants a CRM or service desk on the same boards.
  • Smartsheet — the other long-standing enterprise incumbent, now private. Pick it when the work is grid-shaped (resource plans, PMO rollups) and your users think in spreadsheets.
  • ClickUp — the most aggressive challenger, bundling docs, chat and AI into a cheaper seat. Pick it when price per seat and one-app consolidation outweigh polish and governance.
  • Notion — pick it when documents and wikis are the main artifact and tasks are secondary.
  • Linear — pick it for product and engineering teams; Asana is weaker at issues, cycles and Git workflows.

Watch-outs

  • The AI allowance is pooled per account, not per seat. 75,000 credits a month across a 200-seat Advanced account runs out fast once several teams switch on smart workflows. Guard: before rollout, run your three highest-volume workflows for two weeks, read consumption in the AI Studio admin console, and budget Plus or Pro from that number rather than from the plan name.
  • Agent requests are capped at the account level. At 50 requests a month on Advanced, a single daily AI Teammate digest across a few projects can exhaust the included pool. Guard: assign AI Teammates to a small number of high-value projects first, and set a prepaid request pack in the contract instead of running on $0.60 pay-as-you-go.
  • Integrations are being pruned. Asana retired integrations including Freshdesk, Intercom, DocuSign, Mailchimp and Twilio on 15 April 2026, and the Jira Server integration sunsets on 31 December 2026. Guard: list every integration your workflows depend on and confirm each is on Asana’s current supported list before signing a multi-year term.
  • Retention signals a cautious buying base. Net retention below 100% means many customers are trimming seats. Guard: treat it as negotiating room — ask for seat-reduction rights at renewal and price AI credits as a separate, cancellable line.
