What it is

Trustpilot is an open review platform: anyone can review any business, and the business pays to invite customers, reply, display the rating and analyze what was said. The public side holds more than 361 million reviews (company figure, June 2026). The paid side is Trustpilot Business, which is what a CX or insights team actually buys.

The company is public on the London Stock Exchange (TRST) and growing. H1 2026 revenue was $151.4M, up 23% year on year, bookings rose 22% to $171.2M, and North America bookings grew 27% at constant currency (results published 15 September 2026). It is not a vendor at risk of disappearing mid-contract.

In April 2026 it repositioned around AI search. The 7 April launch added AI Visibility Metrics (where trust signals show up in AI-driven discovery), an invitation-targeting layer, and Reputation Insights dashboards built for marketing, CX and insights teams to read the same numbers. On 29 June 2026 a rebuilt Shopify app went live, with Trustpilot named a key reviews partner inside Shopify.

Why it shows up in Customer Success and VoC stacks

  • It is the one VoC source your customers write without being asked to fill in a form. Surveys measure the questions you chose; Trustpilot reviews capture the complaint the customer chose. That is why Enterpret, Chattermill and Unwrap all ingest it as a source. Trustpilot’s own Review Insights groups reviews into topics, scores sentiment per topic and plots a topic-by-star heatmap, filterable by date, tag and keyword.
  • The rating is now a distribution channel, not just a badge. AI shopping and answer engines lean on third-party review signals, and Trustpilot cites a domain authority of 93 for its review pages. For B2C brands, the TrustScore is increasingly what an assistant quotes before a buyer reaches your site. AI Visibility Metrics is the first Trustpilot product that tries to measure that.
  • The API surface is broad. Separate APIs cover invitations, service reviews, product reviews, business units and a Data Solutions API for Trustpilot’s wider review database. Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Zapier connections let a support or CRM event trigger the review invitation.

Pricing reality

The official plans page lists Free (50 invitations a month, one user), Starter from $99 a month per domain (100 invitations, new customers under $5M revenue only), Plus from $319 (300 invitations, 3 users), Premium from $799 (1,000 invitations, 10 users, a dedicated CSM, full competitor insights) and custom Enterprise. Every paid contract is a 12-month prepaid term, and prices are per domain, so a brand running three country sites pays roughly three times.

AI-assisted replies and the invitation-targeting features sit on Premium and Enterprise. API access is listed as an add-on. The honest band for a mid-market CX team that wants insights and API access, estimated from list prices plus the API add-on, is $10K–25K a year per domain, and enterprise multi-domain deals go well past that. Third-party listings quoted $299 for Plus as recently as March 2026, so list prices have moved up this year.

Best for

B2C and ecommerce CX leaders where public ratings move conversion, and where AI search now sends measurable traffic: retail, travel, financial services, subscription consumer brands. It earns a place in the VoC stack when you also run an analytics layer such as Enterpret or Chattermill that reads Trustpilot alongside tickets and surveys.

Do not buy it if

You sell B2B software. Buyers of software read G2 and peer communities, not Trustpilot, and Trustpilot’s open model means a handful of angry support contacts can set your public score. Skip Premium if all you want is the topic analysis: a VoC tool that already ingests Trustpilot reviews gives you better themes across all your channels, and the free plan keeps you able to reply.

Versus the alternatives

  • Google Business Profile — the largest review surface by volume and free. Pick it alone if you have physical locations and no national ecommerce presence.
  • Bazaarvoice — the enterprise pick for product reviews syndicated across retailer sites. Pick it when your reviews have to appear on retailer listings across its syndication network, not on your own domain.
  • Yotpo — the Shopify brand’s bundle of reviews plus loyalty. Pick it when product-page reviews and retention marketing are one budget.
  • Judge.me — the fastest-climbing challenger on Shopify, with a free plan and more than 46,000 merchant reviews on its App Store listing at a 5.0 rating. Pick it when you need on-site product reviews and not a third-party brand rating.
  • Qualtrics and Medallia — not substitutes. They run the survey program; Trustpilot is one unsolicited input into it.

The pick: buy Trustpilot when the public, independent brand rating is the asset. Buy a product-review tool when the product page is.

Watch-outs

  • Regulators are now testing the “verified” label. Italy’s competition authority fined Trustpilot €4M in March 2026, finding inadequate checks on reviews, including ones marked verified, and invitation tools that let businesses choose who gets asked. Trustpilot is appealing. Guard: invite every customer from an automated event, such as order delivered or ticket closed, never a hand-picked list, and keep the trigger logic documented. The UK DMCC Act and the US FTC fake-reviews rule both put the liability on the business, not only on the platform.
  • Renewals auto-renew at a higher price. Capterra reviewers describe automatic renewals at sharply increased prices, and the 12-month prepaid term leaves no exit mid-year. Guard: put a renewal cap and a 60-day notice window in the first order form, and calendar the notice date at signature.
  • G2 rates it 3.4 out of 5 across about 246 reviews, with support quality scoring lowest. Guard: ask for the named CSM and their response-time commitment in writing before you pay for Premium on the strength of that CSM.
  • Your score is public and you do not control it. Reviews stay on your profile if you cancel. Guard: measure reply time to 1- and 2-star reviews as a CX KPI, owned by the support lead, with a target under 48 hours.
