What it is
RingCentral is the largest independent cloud phone vendor by revenue, public on the NYSE (RNG), selling RingEX (business phone, messaging, and video) to companies of every size and a contact center line on top. Since 2025 it has repositioned that base around four AI products: AIR, an AI receptionist that answers calls and texts; AIR Pro (AI Representative), a configurable agent for multi-step work; AVA, an employee-facing assistant that receives AIR’s handoffs with context; and ACE, AI Conversation Expert, its conversation-intelligence layer.
The AI is now material to the business, not a demo. On its Q2 2026 call RingCentral reported more than 16,000 paying AIR customers, up 400% year over year (from 11,800 in its 7 May announcement), ACE above 6,300 customers, and customers on at least one paid AI product at about 13% of ARR. Voice runs on OpenAI models, including GPT-5.2, under a partnership announced in February 2026.
Two channel facts matter if you are buying in 2026. RingCentral shut down the MiCloud UCaaS platform it took over from Mitel on 24 June 2026 and moved those customers to RingEX. And on 23 July NiCE signed a multi-year deal to resell RingEX, while the RingCentral Contact Center product, powered by NiCE CXone, was extended for another year.
Where it fits
- AIR on the front desk and the overflow queue. Clinics, field-service firms, agencies, and multi-location retailers use AIR to answer every call, take messages, route, and book. The May release added SMS answering and call-queue overflow (both live), plus Shopify order lookups and Calendly booking, rescheduling, and cancellation. WhatsApp was announced as “coming”. Language auto-detection covers 10+ languages, though RingCentral’s own FAQ still described it as arriving soon, so confirm in your tenant.
- Not the whole support line. AIR is built for scoped requests: hours, directions, order status, appointments. Authenticated multi-step transactions belong to AIR Pro, which as of August 2026 is still early access, launched with healthcare skills (patient verification, appointments, billing) and no general-availability date.
- One phone system for the whole company. RingEX covers every employee, not only customer-facing teams, with video, fax, and broad international numbering. AIR then answers on those same numbers, so you avoid a second telephony contract.
- Agents can reach it. Official MCP servers (RingEX Phone, Chat, and Admin in Preview; App Connect in Beta) expose calls, messages, and admin tasks to Claude and other MCP clients, and the REST API is mature.
Pricing reality
RingEX, per user per month: Core $20, Advanced $25, Ultra $35 billed annually, or $30, $35, and $45 month to month. Prices are the same from 1 to 100 users; above 100, RingCentral quotes. Taxes and regulatory fees add to every invoice, and RingCentral reserves the right to raise administrative fees on 30 days’ notice.
AIR is $39 a month as a RingEX add-on, $49 standalone, each with 100 minutes, then $0.50 per minute billed in 30-second increments rounded up. AIR Everywhere, which puts AIR in front of a non-RingCentral phone system, starts at $59 in the US and Canada. Each receptionist needs its own license. ACE starts at $60 per user per month on top of the seat. The native RingCX contact center starts at $65 per agent (third-party pricing guides; confirm with sales).
Real numbers: a 5-location clinic group with 15 users on Core and one AIR answering 600 minutes a month pays about $3,600 a year in seats plus $3,468 for AIR ($39 base and 500 overage minutes at $0.50), roughly $7,000 before taxes. At that volume AIR works out to about $0.48 a minute, near Aircall’s $0.49 pay-as-you-go voice-agent rate and above its $0.29 bundle rate.
Best for
Operations and support leaders at 10 to 1,000-seat companies who need a phone system for the whole company and want an AI receptionist on the same numbers, especially multi-location businesses where missed calls cost appointments and orders.
Skip it if your support line needs an agent that authenticates callers and completes transactions today, or if only a 10-person sales team needs phones: AIR Pro is not generally available, and a sales-first dialer fits that team better.
Versus the alternatives
Microsoft Teams Phone is RingCentral’s largest share rival. Pick Teams Phone when the company already lives in Microsoft 365 and telephony is a utility; pick RingCentral when you want deeper telephony admin, international numbering, and an AI receptionist bundled from one vendor.
Against Dialpad: pick Dialpad when AI transcription and summaries must come on the cheapest seat and you want its no-code agent studio generally available now. Against Aircall or Ringover: pick those when the buyer is a sales or support team under about 150 seats and CRM and help-desk integration depth decides. Past roughly 200 contact-center agents, evaluate NiCE CXone, Five9, or Talkdesk directly.
The fastest-growing entrants are voice-agent platforms such as Retell AI and Vapi, with PolyAI at the enterprise end. Rule: put AIR on your top five call reasons for 60 days. Buy a specialist only if calls need authenticated, multi-step work and its measured containment pays for a second contract.
Watch-outs
- Contracts renew for the full term. RingCentral’s terms require written notice before the term ends, commonly 30 days, or the contract renews at the same length, and reviewers on Capterra and Trustpilot report being billed after they thought they had cancelled. Guard: put the notice date in your contract calendar on signing, and negotiate month-to-month renewal into the order form.
- AIR’s minute meter rounds up. Every call bills in 30-second increments, and a busy line burns through 100 minutes in days. Guard: pull two weeks of call-length data before buying, model the overage at $0.50 a minute, and buy minute bundles instead of paying the overage rate.
- Announced is not shipped. WhatsApp for AIR, auto language switching, and AIR Pro were all marketed before general availability. Guard: name each feature you are buying in the order form with its availability status, and test it in your own tenant before signing a multi-year term.
- Invoices run above the quote. Taxes, regulatory recovery fees, extra numbers at $4.99 a month, and 10DLC texting registration add to every bill. Guard: ask for a fully loaded sample invoice for your seat count and locations before signing, and compare it against the first live bill.
